Gas Networks Ireland seeks hydrogen proposals for two sites

Gas Networks Ireland (GNI) has opened its doors to proposals to develop hydrogen infrastructure at two sites.
The Republic of Ireland published by the Department of Environment, Climate & Communications (DECC) in 2023 that sets out a role for green hydrogen – made using offshore wind power – and the gas network to address ‘hard to abate’ sectors such as transport, industrial heating and power generation.
Now it says it is interested in receiving proposals from interested parties who want to develop hydrogen production on the 22Ha site at the Inch Terminal and the 2.1Ha Midleton compressor station site in Cork. It wants proposals “which could support the development of the Celtic hydrogen cluster and in the demonstration of the transport of hydrogen in repurposed natural gas pipelines”.
In June 2024 GNI published a plan for decarbonisation that would split its network into two parallel systems by 2045, one transporting hydrogen and one transporting biomethane.
GNI wants to hear from interested parties by 27 February.
