Prequalification window opens for Capacity Market auctions

The pre-qualification window has opened today for three different Capacity Market auctions. Pre-qualification will run from today (1 August) to 26 August, and will be followed by the Pre-qualification Assessment Window, from 29 August to 23 September.

The auctions in question are:

  • 2016 Four year ahead Capacity Auction – Delivery year 2020/21 2017
  • Early Capacity Auction – Delivery year 2017/18 2017
  • Transitional Capacity Auction – Delivery year 2017/18
Participants can find out more on the EMR Delivery body’s website
Meanwhile, Defra said it planned to consult later in 2016 on controls to address air pollution – especially NOx – from small generators. It says those considering ‘bidding new capacity into the Capacity Market auctions in 2016 should be aware that installations with a thermal input  less than 50MW that become operational after the publication of proposals are likely to be directly impacted when the legislation comes into force’.
Ofgem has also said it plans to address the level of ‘embedded benefits’ available to small generators. It said it wants to “act quickly to ensure a level playing field” – particularly in relation to the ‘residual’ element of the TNUoS charge, currently valued at c£45/kw.
