The Moyle Interconnector, the 500MW electrical link between Northern Ireland and Scotland, is operating at a reduced capacity of 250MW.
The fault occurred on Saturday 18 February when one cable tripped. Initial investigation has indicated that there is a cable fault in water around 140m deep.
The company said this was “very much an unexpected event” because the fault relates to the high voltage element of the interconnector, “which is robust and well established technology” and been in operation for over 15 years . It added, “It is too early to say if the cable has been damaged on the seabed following some kind of strike or if there is some other reason for the fault.”
