Engie has announced it is withdrawing from NuGen, the company that plans to build three Westinghouse AP1000 reactors at Moorside in West Cumbria. It said NuGen is “facing some significant challenges” and as a result Engie would exercise its rights to transfer its 40% share in the project to joint venture partner Toshiba.
Engie said it “remains willing to put its know-how and expertise at the service of NuGen and help any restructuring with new potential partners for the development, construction and operation of the project”. Engie’s Electrabel, Tractebel, Endel, Engie Axima and Engie Ineo companies are significant in the European nuclear industry.
Engie said it “continues to play a major role in the UK’s energy transition”, highlighting its recent acquisition of Keepmoat’s regeneration business. The company’s strategy would be based on “investment in critical energy infrastructure, integration of its energy expertise with its broad services offer, and innovation in customer-led solutions and technologies”.
Engie is currently expanding its domestic energy supply business.
