Eland Cables, Enertechnos, Brunel University and The Welding Institute have combined in a project to reduce cable losses. The project is supported by a £1 million Innovate UK grant.
The new ‘long linear capacitor’ cable technology is dubbed the Capacitive Transfer System (CTS). The project will include developing and producing prototypes, blending the CTS technology with existing cable manufacturing processes. There is an agreed test site running 15km of ‘standard’ cable alongside the installation to offer direct comparison.
The partners said the UK loses 7.6% of the power it generates during transmission and distribution.
