Energy networks expect a big increase in flexibility services markets in 2019, as distribution network operators include smart flexibility services as part of their day-to-day operations.
The next steps in developing smart networks will be under discussion at a meeting on 1 February, including policymakers from BEIS and Ofgem. The event, held at ENA’s offices in London, will discuss the role of the Open Networks Project in the BEIS/Ofgem Smart Systems & Flexibility Plan and its role in wider government policy, examine progress to date and look ahead to plans for 2019.
The meeting comes as the Open Networks Project begins a consultation on the project’s plans for 2019. In the Phase 3 Work Plan the project will expand on its focus on the future of the whole electricity system by looking across the energy system at gas, heat, transport and waste. In the short term, the project will continue to enable a staggered roll-out of new standards, procedures and processes. The consultation closes on 22 February
