BEIS offers £4.4M funding to develop products that help smart meter owners cut power consumption

BEIS has opened a competition for projects apply for £4.4 million in funding for smart energy projects.

Applicants must develop and trial innovative products and services to deliver additional energy savings in homes through the use of smart meter data.

BEIS says that with the smart meter rollout there will be products and services that help people reduce consumption. But there is limited availability of these products and services and, where available, they are often relatively basic and have not been designed to give the sort of personalised information that would be most effective to help consumers become more energy efficient.

It wants to deliver larger energy savings and has launched the Smart Energy Savings (SENS) Competition. The Competition will offer grant funding to successful applicants to support development of their product or service and in-home trials. BEIS wants the competition to drive market development and provide robust evidence for BEIS on the impact of products and services that can deliver energy savings.

Grant funding will be awarded in two phases with a total grant of up to £700,000 per project across the two phases.

The deadline for submitting registration for phase 1 (developing the product or service) is 5pm, 11 March 2019. Clarification questions have to be submitted to [email protected] by 5pm, 5 March 2019. Phase 2 applications (for trials) close on 31 October.
