Support structures for SeaGen’s 1.2MW tidal stream turbine in Strangford Narrows, Northern Ireland have been decommissioned. Owner Simec Atlantis Energy Limited said it marked the completion of the tidal stream energy project lifecycle.
Specialist UK-based marine business Keynvor MorLift was principal contractor and the final major lift operations included rigging, cutting and lifting of the 500t structure.
The SeaGen turbine was installed in 2008 and exported over 11.6GWh during its useful life. The first phase of decommissioning SeaGen started in May 2016 with the removal of the system’s two 600kW Powertrains. In August 2018 the topsides and crossbeam were removed, and final works were completed with the removal of the remaining tower and subsea structure.
