National Gas Transmission plans to begin contracting in April for ‘Project Union’ hydrogen backbone

National Gas Transmission (NGT) has begun market engagement with potential contractors for Project Union, a programme to repurpose existing gas transmission pipelines, which currently carry methane, to switch to hydrogen transport, in advance of contract notices which are due to be published on 3 April 2024.
By the early 2030s, Project Union aims to to create a UK hydrogen ‘backbone’, transporting 100% hydrogen, connecting hydrogen production and storage with end users by a phased repurposing of existing high pressure gas transmission network infrastructure. Up to 25% of the UK’s current methane transmission network assets will be repurposed for the new backbone. Where necessary this will be supplemented with some new infrastructure by the early 2030s.
NGT is now keen to engage with companies or organisations who specialise in a diverse range of project related activities from early concept through to final commissioning and ongoing maintenance. It is requesting information from companies focused on pipeline design services, construction, systems integrators, materials and OEM suppliers. It is wanst to gauge market appetite and opinion on key strategic options, as well as the supply chain’s interest in NGT as a client.
It has asked for feedback to help to inform and guide the future procurement, commercial and delivery strategy that helps to deliver goods, works and services. Future procurement events will be held to help select approved suppliers for Project Union.
It asked for expressions of interest by 20 December.
