Downing to seek consent for 750MW solar/storage project, says green field solar is ‘essential’

Downing Renewable Developments has announced plans for a 750MW solar and storage project in Lincolnshire.
The project, located on land to the south of Spalding, is known as Meridian Solar Farm. It and its co-located battery will be considered for development consent by the Planning Inspectorate and decided by the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, because it is larger than 50MW.
The firm currently has 5.7GW of renewable energy projects at various stages of development across the UK.
Tony Gannon, head of Downing Renewable Developments, said “As one of the cheapest forms of renewable energy, a fivefold increase in solar capacity is anticipated by 2035 in the Government’s Energy Security Strategy (2022). This cannot be achieved through rooftop and brownfield solar installations alone and, as such, projects such as Meridian Solar Farm will become essential to the UK’s energy mix.”
