Northern Powergrid customers to earn Equiwatt points for avoiding peak hours

Northern Powergrid has added Equiwatt to the flexibility service providers across its area in the North East, Yorkshire and northern Lincolnshire.
Equiwatt will act as an energy aggregator using its ‘virtual power plant’ platform and smart ‘powerDOWN’ programme. It is accessed via a free app, which rewards households for using less energy at peak times.
During powerDOWN events, Equiwatt’s customers can earn points, which can then be redeemed for rewards such as eGift cards via their app gift store.
Customers will be rewarded by taking part in events every day between 4.30pm and 7pm, with a potential to earn £35 worth of points during the trial period.
Maurice Lynch, Head of System Flexibility, Northern Powergrid said: “The start of a new year brings exciting opportunities for our customers to help shape and be part of our drive towards a smarter and more flexible net zero energy system.” The distribution network operator says it is taking a ’flexibility first’ approach to meeting the energy needs of people and businesses across its region.
Johnson Fernandes, Founder and CEO at Equiwatt said: “Our powerDOWN scheme is accessed via a free and easy to use app and invites customers to register for peak-time notifications. Households can then reduce their energy usage during powerDOWN events and earn points, in exchange for rewards in our app gift store.”
