The Scottish Government has granted consent for the construction and operation of a 228MW/456MWh battery near Dalkeith, East Lothian.
Developer Kona Energy said the Smeaton battery is strategically positioned to particularly reduce energy constraints and related costs on the UK grid. It also claimed a role in improving local network stability when the nearby Torness nuclear power station closes in 2028.
Kona Energy, advised by Opus Corporate Finance LLP, will shortly be seeking investment to bring the battery to market.
