SGN has finished laying pipework in an 8.4km network that will deliver hydrogen to domestic in Levenmouth, Fife, as part of the H100 Fife trial.
The network, which runs in parallel to a fossil gas network, will give residents living in the the option of joining Scotland’s first green hydrogen community by signing up to the trial. Participants will heat their homes and cook food using hydrogen. The company is still recruiting participants into the trial.
H100 Fife Distribution Manager Max Biret said: “Having this new network in place means we can start converting customers to green hydrogen once our production and storage site is ready next year.”
A 7MW wind turbine, owned and operated by the Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) Catapult in Fife Energy Park, will supply the renewable electricity for the project’s hydrogen production and storage site.
This electricity will be fed into two alkaline electrolysers totalling 5MW which can deliver up to 2,093kg of green hydrogen per day. The hydrogen will be stored in six purpose-built pressure vessels. It will pass through a pressure reduction station, and be odourised to ensure it has the same smell as fossil gas, before being delivered through the new gas network to the opted-in homes.
In February 2023 Altrad Babcock won the contract to build and integrate elements of the hydrogen production and storage site, designed by Arup.
