Renewables developer to build 12 anaerobic digestion units to take urban food waste

Renewables developer Dark Green Group has unveiled plans to build up to a dozen anaerobic digestion (AD) plants in the next five years on urban industrial sites. It said all the developments will prodice heat, power and hydrogen.
It said it would submit six planning applications this year, with the potential for a further six beyond 2025. The first phase sites a former industrial site at Tyseley Energy Park in Birmingham, and a number of manufacturing campuses in Yorkshire.
The proposed AD plants will convert food waste into green gas for homes and business use. It said government proposals to tighten restrictions on waste to energy plans would help support its plans, which are also driven by new food waste regulations that require separate collection, which will mean 4.75m tonnes of food waste will be diverted from general waste streams to be processed separately. Meanwhile the Green Gas Support Scheme (GGSS) provides financial support to eligible new AD biomethane plants for the injection of ‘green gas’ into the gas grid.
Dark Green’s projects will provide businesses with green gas option for transport, heating or manufacturing.
