The government will increase support for new nuclear fuel production in the UK to £75 million, Energy and Climate Minister Graham Stuart has announced.
Up to £13 million of the fund has already been awarded to develop primary conversion capability for reprocessed and freshly mined uranium at the Springfields site in Lancashire. BEIS said the funding will give the site the capability to convert recycled uranium in the UK, helping diversify supply away from Russia. Ministers hope this will bring export opportunities for the sector and position the UK as an international supplier of nuclear fuel and fuel cycle services.
The remaining £50 million fund, which opens for bids today, is intended to “stimulate a diverse and resilient nuclear fuel market”. It will support projects establishing new domestic fuel capabilities, which could include fuel supply options for light water reactors and small modular reactors, as well as developing new fuel types for future reactor types.
The fund will close to applications on 20 February. Further details of how to apply here
