University of Birmingham plans ‘digital twin’ for region with energy system as early use-case

The University of Birmingham is kicking off procurement of a ‘digital twin’ framework that it says could become a platform for green energy development across the West Midlands.
The university is inviting options for procurement of a base framework for a digital twin at a city scale. The intention is that “This will become a digital asset for Birmingham and the West Midlands region and a platform for accelerating the digital economy of the city and region.” The work will initially be focused around the Tyseley Environmental Enterprise District in East Birmingham but the procurement says future proofing is essential to the design as the aim is for the base framework to grow when further funding becomes available.
The framework will be integrated with use cases envisaged as self-contained applications aligned with the themes of air quality, energy systems and infrastructure and hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles.
