Coryton CCGT will add 77MW and more flexibility after 2025 upgrade

Independent power producer Intergen has ordered two high efficiency upgrades to modernise its Coryton power plant. GE Vernova’s upgrade to the gas turbine, compressor and combustor will help Coryton deliver an additional 77MW of power output, increase its units’ efficiency and extend maintenance intervals.
Coryton is an 800MW combined cycle power plant, located 30 miles east of London, powered by two GT26 gas turbines.
The upgrade will be carried out in 2025.
Jim Lightfoot, InterGen chief executive, said, “We selected GE’s HE upgrade because of its excellent part load efficiency and its fuel-flexible combustion system. With this innovative upgrade, we expect that our power station will benefit from improved efficiency and increased output, in line with our goals.”
GE says the upgrade option, which was introduced in 2019 “combines the best from both GE’s F- and H-Class fleets with additive manufactured parts and innovations in aerodynamics, material science and combustion dynamics”. Six upgraded GT26 units are already in operation. The upgrade will also allow the turbines to operate on a variety of fuels, including blends of hydrogen and natural gas.
