Government acquires Wylfa site to host new large nuclear station

The government has named Wylfa in Anglesey as its preferred site for a new nuclear power station to follow Sizewell C.
It is talking with global energy firms to explore building a plant similar in scale to Sizewell C. The area has one closed nuclear station and had previously expected to host a new one on an adjacent site, Wylfa Newydd. Great British Nuclear recently secured Wylfa, along with Oldbury-on-Severn in Gloucestershire (which also has a closed nuclear unit) as possible new nuclear sites – the first time the government has acquired land for new nuclear since the 1960s.
Gwen Parry-Jones, chief executive of Great British Nuclear, said: “Having agreed to purchase the Wylfa site earlier this year, GBN looks forward to working with the government on the market engagement programme for large scale gigawatt providers and also delivering this vital project in the years to come.”
Secretary of State for Wales David TC Davies said:
Sue Ferns, Senior Deputy General Secretary of Prospect union, said: “Wylfa represents the best site in Europe for a large-scale nuclear power station,” while Tom Greatrex, chief executive of the NIA said it was, “an ideal place for a big nuclear project, and the community knows nuclear”.
