Statera Energy acquires rights to build 680MW battery at Trafford from Carlton Power

Statera Energy has acquired the rights to build a 680MW battery at the Trafford Low Carbon Energy Park in Greater Manchester from Carlton Power.
The 12Ha Trafford Low Carbon Energy Park is a brownfield site owned by Carlton Power and until 1991 it housed the Carrington coal-fired power station. It now houses a gas-fired power station (in operation since 2016 and owned by ESB) and an agreement is in place for Highview Power to build a £300 million liquid air energy storage (LAES) project.
Carlton Power secured planning consent in 2023 for up to 2GW of battery capacity on the site. In 2022 it was also granted planning consent for a green hydrogen production facility of up to 200MW. The first phase of the Trafford Green Hydrogen facility – a 15MW scheme – has secured a financial support contract from the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero and is targeted to enter operation within the next two years.
Keith Clarke, Carlton Power’s CEO, said: “Our agreement with Statera Energy is a further step in the development of the Trafford Low Carbon Energy Park”. He added, “we are actively exploring further options to fully realise the strategic benefits of the Trafford facility.”
