The shadow energy and climate change minister Barry Gardiner has been promoted to shadow secretary of state for energy and climate change, after Lisa Nandy resigned in protest at Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership.
The shadow energy minister responsible for transmission and distribution, Alan Whitehead, also announced his resignation. He said he would continue to “work hard on energy and climate change policy from the backbenches”. Whitehead is the Labour MP for Southampton Test.
The former shadow minister for energy markets, Clive Lewis, also left the shadow energy team after he was named shadow defence secretary by Corbyn. He replaces Emily Thornberry, who moves to replace Hilary Benn as shadow foreign secretary.
Labour has yet to announce a new shadow energy minister for transmission and distribution, shadow climate change minister or shadow minister for energy markets.
