The world’s largest subsea power cable comes ashore at Ardneil Bay in North Ayrshire. At around 385km long, it is a crucial part of the £1 billion Western Link project, a joint venture between ScottishPower and National Grid to transport power between Scotland and England and Wales.
During the cable laying marine engineers discovered a sunken German U-boat off the coast of Dumfries that according to folklore was attacked by a sea monster while prowling Scotland’s coastline towards the end of World War I.
