National Grid has announced the start of work on a new 1.4GW interconnector linking the GB grid with Denmark. The £1.8 billion project is a joint venture by National Grid and Danish transmission company Energinet and is due to enter service in 2023.

The HVDC link includes a 765km long subsea cable between Bicker Fen in Lincolnshire and the substation Revsing in South Jutland, Denmark. The start of work is construction of an access road for the converter station. Works will be carried out by Siemens which is supplying converter stations for the HVDC link.

Final development costs for the project were  funded through the European Union’s Connecting Europe Facility (CEF), which provides funding for key connections to facilitate power and gas sharing across the EU’s energy market.
