Western Link is the new cable linking the Scotland and England/Wales parts of the GB market. The submarine HVDC cable is 385km long and is a joint venture between National Grid and ScottishPower Transmission. It has been eagerly awaited by Scottish wind farm developers that have for years had too much power to export across the very limited links between the two parts of the system. Consumers will be equally glad to have the new link in operation: National Grid said recently that once commissioned the link should cut constraint payments by £90 million annually.
