Electricity network expansion: accommodating more nuclear, wind and interconnectors

National Grid’s Electricity Ten Year Statement has set out areas where the transmission network is coming under pressure as demand and generation change, highlighting areas that have to be reinforced. The system operator said increased generation from wind and nuclear at the periphery of the network and more use of interconnectors were major drivers of the need for reinforcement. In addition, it cited the growth of embedded generation and challenges to the network that arise because fossil generation is closing.
