The “political will is there” to set a ‘net zero’ carbon emissions target. And from a practical point of view, to pass the primary legislation necessary “you couldn’t hope for a better set of ministers” to steer legislation and parliament has “lots of dead time” to do it. That was the message from the Energy Transitions Commission, a group of leaders from across the energy landscape, launching ‘Mission Possible’, a report arguing that achieving net zero in ‘hard to abate’ sectors “is technically possible by mid-century at a cost to the economy of less than 0.5% of global GDP”.
