Networks that used to deliver power to customers on demand now have to deal with ‘prosumers’ at all scales, new services, new participants, and different types of network activity. The future will be more complex. Janet Wood reports
To many consumers, energy networks are often just “the grid” – or even “the electricity (or gas) board”. In electricity, some may know that the high voltage electricity network (owned by National Grid, SSE or Scottish Power, and managed as a system by National Grid) is different to the local, low voltage, distribution network, but most might assume that there is not much change in the monopoly transmission owners (TOs) and distribution network operators (DNOs).
